Since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed two things, art and nature. I can remember running through the woods for hours while pretending to be my childhood heroes. I’d climb to the top of the tallest trees in my neighborhood and look out over my town, Greenville, Mississippi, as Spiderman would do when he would climb the Empire State building to watch over New York City. I loved Batman as well. Tying my coat around my neck as a cape, I’d attach a rope to the branches of some of those trees just as Batman would throw his grappling hook around a piece of metal railing on a skyscraper. I would then swing across the air as if I was swinging across Gotham City, but my rope would break and send me falling towards the ground. Mine didn’t look as heroic as Batman’s cape, but no one could convince me that I wasn’t just as iconic.
In those early years my passion for drawing got me in a lot of trouble. During Sunday School, I would be reprimanded because I would draw epic battles of muscle bound superheroes and villains instead of paying attention to the lessons. In elementary school, I would be caught drawing Superman flying across my math book pages instead of taking notes from the teacher. Man, those were the days!
As you can tell, I’ve always expressed myself creatively and through the years I’ve been fortunate enough to do so as a professional artist through the medium of 3d modeling, animation and motion graphics. I really am lucky to be doing what I love and every day really is a fun experience!
A new chapter in my life is unfolding and I’ve taken an interest in painting. It has always been a medium that I’ve appreciated, but never had any formal training or instruction in the craft. The more time I would spend in nature, the more my desire to paint would increase. Bridget, my fiancé, and I have enjoyed the beauty of nature together. We’ve explored the mountains, beaches, waterfalls, and hiking trails of North Carolina and we’ve had some truly breathtaking glimpses of the natural beauty that surrounds us. After having those amazing encounters with nature, I wanted to begin painting some of the things that inspired me. After Bridget’s gentle nudges and encouragement, I went to the local art store, bought a set of watercolor paints and canvas paper, and decided to start painting.
I really enjoyed this process and I look forward to experiencing the journey of learning to paint.
